SBB Waiting Pavilion

The new SBB waiting pavilion was developed as a standalone product suited to the diverse spatial contexts of Swiss railway platforms. It creates a sheltered space for waiting and lingering, combining a high-quality environment with a clear, understated design language.
Maximum transparency lies at the heart of the design. Expansive glass surfaces maintain a visual connection to the platform and the surrounding station area, while the precision-engineered steel structure lends the space clear order and stability. The slender, rigid structure—made of laser-welded steel tubes—reduces the product to a few essential elements, making the structure itself an integral part of the design.
Warm wooden benches create a deliberate contrast to the industrial precision of the steel and glass structure. Their opposing arrangement offers various seating and waiting options while ensuring spacious, barrier-free accessibility.
Designed for heavy use in public spaces, all components prioritize robustness, durability, and ease of maintenance. Individual parts can be cleaned, replaced, or renewed as needed. A sacrificial layer protects vulnerable components, facilitating long-term maintenance. Sustainability is thus achieved primarily through a consistent focus on longevity, repairability, and resource conservation.
The graphic dot pattern on the glazing transforms SBB’s standard anti-collision marking into a distinctive design element. At the same time, the grid can be adapted to include bird-protection printing where required, allowing it to be used on other exposed glass surfaces.
The waiting pavilion thus combines structural precision, functional robustness, and understated design into a durable product for public spaces. It offers shelter without isolating users and blends in without being intrusive.
Personally, I would choose the second version for your website. It leans more towards effective portfolio or project communication: the images already convey a great deal about construction and materiality, so the text does not need to explain every technical detail. Instead, it should communicate the design concept and the quality behind the product.
