SBB bench
The new bench for SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) is designed to enhance the quality of stay and comfort on train platforms and in public areas with a sustainable, high-quality product range. The bench's design, in terms of form and materials, reflects the SBB brand and blends seamlessly into the diverse architectural environments of the station. The bench appears inviting, elegant, and timeless, and can accommodate the needs of different user groups.
During development, particular attention was paid to ergonomics and especially to the needs of people with reduced mobility (raised seating surface, standing aid, and tactile feedback). The materials and components were deliberately chosen to be natural, sustainable, and durable. All parts can be easily cleaned, quickly replaced, and maintained using a sacrificial coating. The technical requirements (weight, combination of advertising, vandal resistance) have been met through the selection of materials, surfaces, and specially tested maintenance techniques. The significant weight of the wind loads has been subtly integrated into the form of the concrete elements.
In an interdisciplinary development process involving internal and external experts, a seating arrangement was created that will significantly shape the image of Switzerland in the future. A high level of design and a welcoming, inviting character are central to the concept. The generous wooden seating surface features an asymmetrical support structure to facilitate comfortable seating for everyone. Design: Lukas Lüttgen / Bernhard Burkard. Lukas Lüttgen made a noteworthy contribution to the project as part of his diploma thesis «Voie».
